Paul R. McAdoo is a litigation associate who frequently handles media and First Amendment cases, copyright and trademark disputes, and other commercial and civil litigation matters at the trial and appellate levels.  Paul’s media law practice includes all aspects of the field, including providing pre-broadcast and pre-publication review and advice, protecting journalists from subpoenas, defending against defamation, privacy and other content-related claims, and dealing with access to public records, public meetings, and courts.

 

Paul is a member of the Florida Bar and is admitted to practice before all of Florida’s federal courts and the Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit.  Paul has been selected annually as a “Rising Star” by Super Lawyers magazine since 2010. 

 

Paul has been active in the legal community at both the state and national levels.  He is a member of the ABA’s Forum on Communications law and has served as a Vice Chair on the Forum’s Training and Development committee, which runs the annual Media Advocacy Workshop, since 2010.  Paul is also a member of the ABA’s Tort Trial and Insurance Practice Section, serving as a Vice Chair on the Media, Privacy, and Defamation Law committee since 2011.  In Florida, Paul has served on the Media & Communications Law committee since 2008 and Co-Chaired the 2011 Florida Bar Reporter’s Workshop. 

 

Paul is also a frequent author and speaker on legal issues.  In 2007, Paul co-authored an article in the William Mitchell Law Review: “Common Law or Shield Law: How Rule 501 Could Solve the Journalist’s Privilege Problem.”  Paul has also been the co-author of the Eleventh Circuit Update in the Media Law Resource Center’s Media Libel Law publication since 2009.  Paul’s speaking engagements have included presentations on the NCAA v. AP public records cases for both the Florida Bar Reporter’s Workshop and the First Amendment Foundation’s Sunshine Seminar.  Paul also spoke at the Florida Bar Media Law Conference in 2012 on the newsgathering issues the media and public would face at the 2012 GOP National Convention. 

 

Paul received his bachelor’s degree in international affairs and history from Florida State University in 1993.  Paul graduated cum laude with liberal studies honors and is a member of Phi Beta Kappa. Paul also holds master’s degrees from Florida State University in social science education and sports management.  Paul earned his J.D., cum laude from the University of Florida in 2006.  While in law school, Paul was a member of the Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot Court and competed in Vienna, Austria in 2006. 

 

Paul and his wife, Kate, live in Tampa with their son, Reilly.
