Bill Marple has served as national and trial counsel in more than 160 complex civil matters in state and federal trial and appellate courts across the country. These matters have generated more than 60 reported decisions and include representation in complex tort litigation, matters involving financial institutions and credit reporting agencies, construction-related matters, products liability, and class actions. In his 24 years with Jones Day, he has had extensive deposition and other pretrial discovery experience; successful motion practice; development, defense, and presentation of expert witnesses at depositions and trial; and substantial appellate experience.
Some of the leading cases that Bill has handled include: Crockett v. R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co., 436 F.3d 529 (5th Cir. 2006), in which the Fifth Circuit recognized a new basis to remove diversity cases to federal court — misjoinder of parties; Green v. R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co., 274 F.3d 263 (5th Cir. 2001), in which the Fifth Circuit expanded the right to remove a diversity case, after the initial 30 days to remove had expired, based on a change in the law; and Sanchez v. Liggett & Myers, Inc., 187 F.3d 486 (5th Cir. 1999), in which the Fifth Circuit broadly interpreted the Texas Products Liability Act to grant immunity to tobacco manufacturers from almost all cases alleging personal injury from cigarette smoking. Bill also has been involved in the class action litigation brought in the aftermath of 2005's Hurricane Katrina in federal court in New Orleans, conducting depositions of class representatives and plaintiffs' class experts.
Bill is an accomplished equestrian and owns and shows champion American Saddlebred horses, including 2006 world champion Enzo. He supports equine welfare organizations and activities and has been featured in The National Horseman, Horse World, and other national horse publications.
He is a member of the Dallas Bar Association (Business Litigation Section) and the State Bar of Texas Litigation Section and Animal Law Section.
