Tara L. Whitaker is a family law and divorce attorney with a practice located in downtown Birmingham. Tara is known for her dedication to her clients, her hard work and her professionalism both in and out of the courtroom. Tara is further known for her adaptive nature as a fierce competitor to obtain the best possible result for her clients. Tara is a savvy negotiator and a quick thinker, which helps her have such a competitive edge in fighting for her client’s rights. Although Tara may be fierce in the courtroom, she develops a trusting relationship with her clients and goes the extra mile in making sure her client not only feels comfortable in speaking with her, but also ensuring that each client is treated as a top priority. Tara understands that family law related matters, such as divorce, child custody, visitation, alimony, etc. are very sensitive in nature and her goal is to not only achieve the best result possible, but to also relieve some of the stress her clients may be experiencing.
Before graduating from law school, Tara worked alongside the Honorable David C. Bramlette, as an intern. Judge Bramlette is a United States District Court Judge for the Southern District of Mississippi. After graduating law school and before taking her bar exam, Tara was hired as a Research Assistant for Evelyn Tombers, a professor of her law school, Thomas M. Cooley, and as an Associate Professor teaching Introduction to Law, a beginner’s course for new law students.
Tara began practicing law in the State of South Carolina in 2004. Upon passing the South Carolina bar exam, she began her career as a law clerk for the Honorable Baxter Hicks Harwell, Jr. Working for Judge Harwell gave Tara terrific insight into the way Judges think on various situations while on the bench and away from the bench.
Following Tara’s clerkship, she began practicing litigation with the Bell Legal Group of Georgetown, South Carolina. While working with the Bell Legal Group, Tara litigated cases in many states, including Florida, Georgia, New York, Pennsylvania, and Alabama. These cases involved large corporations, such as Ford Motor Company, General Motors, and Toyota. Tara aggressively fought with these corporations to seek the relief her clients needed. One such particular case was presented to the public via Court T.V. Tara also began working with the family law courts of South Carolina by becoming a Guardian ad Litem. As a Guardian ad Litem, Tara represented children of parents in divorce, child custody, and visitation and in matters pertaining to juvenile criminal charges. Tara is very dedicated to speaking up for the rights of children, especially with regard to a child’s safety and welfare.
After having a successful career in the State of South Carolina, Tara decided to move closer to her family and moved to Birmingham, Alabama. Tara truly loves residing in Birmingham and has been an active part of the community. Upon moving to Birmingham, Alabama, Tara began work with the firm Alvis & Willingham where she continued her litigation career. Following her employment with Alvis & Willingham, Tara decided to focus solely on the practice of family law litigation. Tara began working for the Rose Law Firm, LLC where she continued litigating for clients that were in need of an attorney that could handle their particular needs.
Today, Tara is the owner of The Whitaker Law Firm, LLC with a concentration centered upon family law practice. Tara has handled numerous divorce, spousal support, paternity, grandparent’s rights, child custody, visitation, child support, guardianship, and various other cases pertaining to the practice of family law.
Tara fights aggressively in and outside of the courtroom to make sure that the best possible result is obtained for her clients. Regardless of whether a case is large or small, Tara fights for the justice that her clients deserve.
