In 1968, Stephen Lowey co-founded the law firm now named Lowey Dannenberg Bemporad & Selinger P.C. Since that date, he has led the firm's complex litigation practice, handling cases in each of the firm's primary practice areas: investor litigation and prescription drug overcharge litigation. Mr. Lowey is a shareholder and is Chairman of the firm.
Mr. Lowey's notable achievements include:
Perhaps Mr. Lowey's most challenging litigation was In the Matter of American Bank & Trust Co., Index No. 18649/76 (Sup. Ct., N.Y. Co. 1979), where, after four years of preparation and four months of trial against the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, his clients, 115 Mexican and other Latin American families, recovered substantially all of their losses resulting from a fraudulent scheme leading to the failure of a major New York bank.
Stephen Lowey was born in New York, NY and grew up in St. Albans, Queens. He attended and graduated from Woodmere Academy (1951), Harvard College (A.B., cum laude, 1955) and Columbia Law School (LL.B. 1958). He served in the United States Coast Guard Reserve from 1959 to 1967 and as Assistant U.S. Attorney, Eastern District of New York, from 1961 to 1964.
Mr. Lowey met Nita Melnikoff in 1960 and married her in 1961. The Loweys recently celebrated their 45th wedding anniversary with their three children and seven grandchildren.
Mr. Lowey participated in the Experiment in International Living as an Experimenter to Lille, France in 1952 and a Group Leader to Grenoble, France in 1957. He joined the Board of Trustees of World Learning in 1986 and served as Board Chair for three years (1997-2000). He is now Chairman Emeritus. In 1995, the Loweys endowed a scholarship fund which each year sends more than twelve Westchester County high school students abroad on Experiment programs.
Mr. Lowey was given an AV rating by Martindale-Hubbell, the highest rating a lawyer can obtain, indicating a very high to preeminent legal ability and exceptional ethical standards as established by confidential opinions from members of the Bar.
Mr. Lowey is admitted to practice in New York; and is a member of the bars of the U.S. Courts of Appeals for the 2nd, 3rd and 4th Circuits; and the U.S. District Courts for the Southern, Eastern and Northern Districts of New York.
