Family Law
The dissolution of a marriage or domestic partnership is one of the most difficult and stressful events we may experience during our lifetimes. We are at our most vulnerable and need dependable and reliable counsel to advise us of our legal rights and obligations and guide us through the legal process of divorce or separation.
Family Law by its very name affects the most important interpersonal relationships we have--the relationships within families. Our society places a high value on the preservation of these relationships, especially those involving children.
In my practice I strive to find creative and economical solutions to meet your needs while still aggressively advocating for your best interests. I handle contested and uncontested matters, and where appropriate will utilize the collaborative process for resolving disputes. I never forget that it is your case and that the issues in the case are important to you.
Family Law encompasses many issues: Adoption, paternity, child custody, visitation, guardianship, and child support; spousal support, alimony or palimony; property characterization and valuation; identification, division and assignment of assets and obligations or liabilities; division or allocation of retirement benefits; dissolution (divorce) of the marriage or domestic partnership or legal separation; post-judgment enforcement of orders or settlement agreements; restraining orders; and pre-nuptial agreements just to name a few.
Estate Planning
Estate Planning involves issues from financial planning to testamentary documents. Needs vary from person to person, and change during our lifetimes. For assistance with Last Wills and Testaments, Durable Powers of Attorney for Health Care and Property Management, and Advanced Health Care Directives please call for an appointment.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why did you become a lawyer?
I went to law school because I wanted a career helping people.
What has helped you to be a better lawyer?
Life experience and wonderful mentors. I came to law as a second career after first owning and operating a small business with my husband. I have had the opportunity to meet and learn from successful practicing attorneys.
What do you enjoy most about the practice of law?
I love practicing law and enjoy the challenges of each case. The law is constantly changing and I find that mentally stimulating.
What are your strengths and style?
Clients have described me as soft spoken on the outside, steel on the inside. I take an assertive approach to matters, but will seek cooperative solutions wherever appropriate.
Describe your practice.
My practice is primarily in the area of family law; however, I also provide estate planning assistance, preparing wills, health care directives, and powers of attorney.
What can a client do to help in his or her case?
Be informed and prepared. Copy important documents and bring them to your appointment. If there is an existing case, bring copies of all documents already filed in the matter. Focus on the issues, and think about what is really important to you so that you can explain your position when we meet. Do not be afraid to ask questions. It is important to me that you fully understand the issues and consequences in your case.
