Michael Welch's focus is on complex litigation, including international and multi-jurisdictional issues, antitrust, mass and toxic torts, and internal corporate investigations.
Michael represents a subsidiary of Parker Hannifin Corporation in investigations by the U.S. Department of Justice, the European Commission on Competition, and the competition agencies of Japan, Korea, Brazil, and Australia, regarding alleged bid rigging, price-fixing, and market allocation in the marine oil and gas hose industry. Michael also defends a major Middle Eastern construction company related to civil claims brought under the Antiterrorism Act, RICO, and the Alien Tort Claims Act in In re Terrorist Attacks on September 11, 2001. In addition, he represents IBM in litigation related to several hundred personal injury and property damage claims involving vapor intrusion and groundwater contamination in upstate New York.
Michael has appeared before the U.S. Immigration Court and the D.C. Superior Court. He has significant experience in electronic discovery issues with a strong understanding of electronic discovery obligations and substantial cost-saving opportunities during the discovery process.
Michael’s strong commitment to pro bono work focuses primarily on issues involving children. He has successfully represented a local non-profit nursery school in a contract dispute, the family of an autistic child seeking improved educational support from a local school district, and a maternal grandmother in obtaining custody of her grandson after the death of her daughter. He currently takes referrals from The Children's Law Center to represent those who wish to provide safe, permanent homes to low income, at risk children in Washington, D.C.
