Family and Divorce law has a reputation for being emotionally charged. Both colleagues and clients commonly ask me “why did you decide to devote so much of your practice to family law?”
I’ve found that most of my clients have their first legal experience through their divorce. This places someone who is already emotionally compromised in a new situation, leaving them unsure of their rights, and doubting their own judgment, fearing that any misstep could have serious negative consequences.
I decided to become an attorney my freshman year in college. I was involved, and injured in a car accident. I was 18 years old with no legal experience, and no understanding of my rights. Between the way law enforcement handled the case, the rules and regulations of the Court, and the apprehension about speaking directly to a judge, I felt absolutely lost, and most importantly, that I had no authority to make decisions for myself.
Fortunately, I was able to find an attorney to walk me through the process, and my story had a happy ending, but I never forgot that feeling of confusion, and how important it was that my attorney took the time to educate me about the law, allowing me to be part of the decision making process.
I understand what my clients are going through, and I strive to help them regain control.
Six years after my case was over, I graduated law school. My first job was as a Prosecuting Attorney for the State of Florida, and this experience was invaluable in preparing me for a career of litigation.
While I enjoyed the active trial schedule and the opportunities that working for the State provided, I saw a need for attorneys who not only zealously represented their clients, but educated them, and empowered them to make decisions with confidence. With that in mind, I went into private practice, and have been assisting my clients ever since.
While criminal trial work is exciting, and still a part of my practice, I found that the clients who had the largest need for clear guidance and zealous representation were involved in family litigation.
Client education and empowerment are the central tenants of my practice. I firmly believe that an informed, educated client is an invaluable member of the legal team.
