Debra's interest in studying law was piqued by a UCLA undergraduate history course on Constitutional law and sex discrimination. The course, along with her background in women's studies, inspired Debra to apply her knowledge and skills to helping others who are disadvantaged.
Debra's first legal job was assisting victims of domestic violence to obtain restraining orders. She then turned to the political arena, where she served as a Congressional Intern for Congressman Henry Waxman in Washington, D.C., responding to constituents' concerns on a myriad of issues. During law school, Debra interned in Governor Dukakis' Legal Counsel's Office, where she conducted research instrumental to passing the Governor's strong drunk driving law, and also interned for the Massachusetts Attorney General on administrative law issues; Debra is also admitted to practice in Massachusetts. Her attraction to politics was highlighted by a one year stint as a national field organizer for the Mondale presidential campaign.
After law school, Debra found her niche in research and writing in the area of civil litigation. At BIREN/KATZMAN, Debra continues to work on matters of social importance; handling the firm's appellate work and most significant law and motion matters at the trial court level.
Debra's extracurricular activities and interests include travel, theater, piano, reading, running and climbing Mount Everest.
