Sutherland, Brian J.

Brian J. Sutherland focuses his practice on representing victims of all types of employment discrimination, including race, gender, age, and disability discrimination, sexual harassment, and whistleblower retaliation.

Mr. Sutherland is a summa cum laude graduate of the Seattle University School of Law. He was a recipient of the Trustee's and Achievement Scholarships, served as a Research and Technical Editor for the Seattle University Law Review, and was the founder and president of the student chapter of the American Constitution Society. He also participated in the Access to Justice Institute's Community Justice Centers and served as a judicial extern for United States District Judge Marsha J. Pechman in the Western District of Washington.

Before joining Buckley & Klein, Mr. Sutherland served as a Trial Attorney for the United States Equal Employment Opportunity Commission in its Miami District Office and prosecuted race, gender, and disability discrimination cases for the federal government. Prior to that, he was a Staff Attorney for the American Civil Liberties Union Southern Regional Office and Voting Rights Project, where he represented plaintiffs in federal and state voting rights and constitutional litigation and engaged in lobbying and public education efforts related to voting rights issues. He has published several scholarly articles on institutional race discrimination, attorney's fees in civil rights cases, and voting rights issues. He is also actively involved with the Atlanta Volunteer Lawyers Foundation.

Mr. Sutherland is a member of the State Bars of Washington State and Georgia, and is admitted to practice in the Northern District of Georgia.

In his spare time, Brian enjoys sailing, bicycling, camping, and taking his dog Amy to the dog park at Piedmont Park. He also enjoys spending time with his extended family, which also relocated from Washington and now call Atlanta home.
