Ken Smith handles complex commercial and tax litigation matters. His practice focuses on multistate tax controversies, contract litigation, and shareholder disputes. He also has extensive experience handling adversary proceedings in bankruptcy court and appellate work.
Ken has been lead counsel on multistate tax litigation matters for such diverse clients as Atlanta Gas Light Company, Cessna Aircraft, Delta Air Lines, Expedia, FedEx Ground, General Electric, Havertys, HealthSouth, Hotels.com, IBM, J.C. Penney, MeadWestvaco Corporation, QuikTrip, Target, Verizon, Wal-Mart, W.C. Bradley Company, and Wiltel Communications.
Ken writes and lectures before business and professional groups, including the Tax Executive Institute, Council on State Taxation, and the Institute for Professionals in Taxation.
Ken is listed in The Best Lawyers in America for commercial litigation and tax (2009-2010) and has been named by Chambers USA (2008 and 2009) as one of "America's Leading Lawyers for Business" ("he impresses market observers with his ‘highly effective trial skills’ in complex commercial litigation and tax specific cases"). Atlanta magazine has honored him as a "Georgia Super Lawyer" every year since 2004. He is also listed in Super Lawyers — Corporate Counsel Edition, a national publication. Ken has been recognized as one of Georgia Trend's "Legal Elite" and named by James Magazine as one of "Georgia's Legal Leaders." The Georgia Bar Journal recently named him as one of "Georgia's Legal Legacies." In 2009, Ken was elected a Master of the Lumpkin Inn of Court.
A fifth generation Atlantan, Ken is also a community leader and serves on and chairs numerous local nonprofit boards.
