Mike Shumaker has nearly 20 years of experience in commercial litigation, focusing his practice on class action defense, corporate fraud, and United States trade and customs investigations. Mike is commonly tasked with the day-to-day management of complex, often joint defense, litigation matters. In addition to his trial practice, Mike advises clients regarding compliance with U.S. trade and customs laws and the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA).
Mike is currently representing the Ascension Health system in two separate class action lawsuits in which Ascension hospitals are alleged to have conspired with other area hospitals to suppress nurse wages in violation of the Sherman Antitrust Act. Mike has served as the primary advocate for Ascension in the now three-year-long litigation, handling most court appearances and major depositions. Mike also recently represented R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company in a series of cases filed under the federal and state RICO statutes against retailers and wholesalers alleged to have defrauded R.J. Reynolds through their marketing programs. Mike has experience in defending and prosecuting claims of accounting fraud as well.
Significant matters in which Mike has a played a central role in the representation include Bridgestone/Firestone in the defense of alleged tire-caused rollovers, Aventis in the defense of antitrust price claims in the vitamins market, and Richard Scrushy in the defense of white-collar criminal matters.
Mike is the administrative partner of the Washington Office. He is a member of the District of Columbia and Pennsylvania bars.
