Matthew Holmwood is a partner in the firm’s Securities Department, and a member of the Securities Litigation and Enforcement Practice Group and the Investigations and Criminal Litigation Group. He joined the firm in 2004.
Practice
Mr. Holmwood represents clients in SEC Division of Enforcement matters, federal criminal prosecutions, internal investigations and securities class actions. His clients include companies, special committees and individuals. Mr. Holmwood’s recent SEC enforcement matters addressed issues including options backdating, asset valuation, revenue recognition and earnings management. His criminal representations have included clients charged with securities fraud related to accounting for stock options and revenue recognition. Mr. Holmwood also has had significant involvement in sentencing advocacy, and recently helped clients secure sentences significantly below the guideline range in two complex and high-profile matters.
In addition to an active securities practice, Mr. Holmwood has experience representing clients in a wide range of civil litigation before federal courts, state courts and arbitrators involving a diverse range of subject matters, such as antitrust, bankruptcy, breach of contract and RICO. Mr. Holmwood has practiced before the District Court for the District of Columbia, the Southern District of New York, the Northern District of California, the Eastern District of Pennsylvania and the Eastern District of Virginia. He has drafted briefs submitted to the Court of Appeals for the Third, Fourth and Ninth Circuits and argued before the Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit.
Prior to joining WilmerHale, Mr. Holmwood practiced at a law firm in Philadelphia.
