Vivek P. Shankam, Ph.D. is a Scientific Advisor in the New York office of Frommer Lawrence & Haug LLP.
Dr. Shankam specializes in the areas of Textiles, Fiber and Polymer Science, and Electrical Engineering. He is involved in the preparation and prosecution of textile and electrical patent applications. Prior to re-joining the firm in 2008, Dr. Shankam was a Patent Agent at Baker & McKenzie LLP, New York for a short period of time. Prior to entering the Patent business, Dr. Shankam was a Research Assistant in the College of Textiles at North Carolina State University, Raleigh, NC. He has presented his work at several national and international scientific conferences. Dr. Shankam is also an active member of The Fiber Society and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers.
Dr. Shankam earned his Ph.D. in Fiber and Polymer Science with a minor in Electrical Engineering under the directions of Dr. William Oxenham, Dr. Abdelfattah Seyam and Dr. Edward Grant from North Carolina State University in 2005. His doctoral research was directed to the development of a novel technique to measure and control yarn tension using wireless MEMS (MicroElectroMechanical Systems) technology. His research interests included microminiature sensors and advanced robotics. Prior to his doctoral degree, he received a Master of Textiles in 2003 from North Carolina State University. He earned a Bachelor of Technology degree from Bangalore University, Bangalore, India in 2001 and worked as a project trainee at the Fiber Reinforced Plastics Pilot Plant in National Aerospace Laboratories (NAL), Bangalore before coming to the United States.
Dr. Shankam is currently pursuing an MBA in Law & Business at Fordham University, New York. He is expected to graduate in Fall of 2010.
