Amy Segal is a special counsel in the Tax Practice Group. She joined the firm in 2002.
Practice
Ms. Segal’s practice focuses on tax and other legal issues of charities, such as foundations, schools and educational organizations, scientific and environmental organizations, youth-oriented groups, arts organizations and community groups, as well as other tax-exempt organizations. Ms. Segal assists a wide range of clients in areas such as grant making, structuring and other corporate matters, corporate governance, joint ventures, unrelated business income tax, internet activities, fundraising and charitable solicitation, conflicts of interest, private foundation rules, intermediate sanctions, legal issues related to sponsored research, lobbying, and obtaining and maintaining tax-exempt status. Ms. Segal provides pro bono representation for many non-profit organizations.
Ms. Segal formerly was general counsel at Education Development Center, Inc., an international non-profit organization, and has practiced in the Office of the General Counsel, Harvard University. She also has practiced exempt organizations law in New York and Washington, DC.
Professional Activities
Ms. Segal serves as trustee of both the Grass Foundation and Charles River Conservancy. She is an officer of the Sabre Foundation and a member of the Boston Bar Association. Ms. Segal also served as a past officer of the Exempt Organizations Subcommittee, Committee on Taxation for the American Bar Association.
