Selzer, Robert S.

From 1991 until 2004, Tom Heyman headed the intellectual property practice in the New York Office of Jones Day. For more than 40 years, he has represented a broad range of corporations involved with telecommunication, electronic, pharmaceutical, chemical, and mechanical technologies in all aspects of intellectual property law. The representations have involved extensive litigation, including defense and prosecution of patent infringement, licensing, trade secrets, and related antitrust suits in federal and state courts and before the International Trade Commission. His representations have also included the defense and prosecution of trademark and copyright infringement, false advertising, and other unfair competition litigations. In addition, he has extensive counseling experience in all aspects of an intellectual property law practice, including validity and infringement opinions, and technology transfers, including the negotiation of patent, know-how, and trademark acquisitions and licenses.

Tom has written and lectured on patent and related antitrust issues. He was a founding member of the ITC Trial Lawyers Association, served as its president and is a past member of its Executive Committee. He has been an active member of the Association of the Bar of the City of New York and has served on that association's Trade Regulations, Federal Regulations, Municipal Affairs, State Legislation, and Courts of Superior Jurisdiction Committees. In addition, he is a member of the New York State Bar Association; the Litigation, Intellectual Property Law, and Antitrust Law Sections of the American Bar Association; and the New York and American Intellectual Property Law Associations. He is chairman of the board of directors of the First Department Assigned Counsel Corporation, which operates the Office of the Appellate Defender handling pro bono criminal appeals in the First Department and which has been nationally recognized as a pioneer in providing appellate legal services to indigent defendants. He has served as a member of the board of visitors of Georgetown University Law Center and a member of the board of trustees of the New Jersey Chamber Music Society.
