Mr. Helmer was born in Colorado Springs, Colorado in 1946. Mr. Helmer received his undergraduate degree from the University of Colorado in 1968. After receiving his B.A. from the University of Colorado, Mr. Helmer also attended graduate school and spent some time in the United States Army Reserves, and then attended the University of Colorado School of Law in Boulder, Colorado. Upon receiving his Juris Doctorate from the University of Colorado in 1973, Mr. Helmer went to work for Hollenbeck, King, French & Mills in Boulder, Colorado, where he practiced for a short while before moving to the mountains of Colorado in 1976.

In 1976, Mr. Helmer began working with Climax Molybdenum Company and handled all of their union grievances and arbitrations, as well as dealing with the Mine Enforcement Safety Administration in the State of Colorado and the Federal Government’s Mine Safety and Health Administration. In 1982 Mr. Helmer ran for the office of State Senate and lost to his Democratic opponent. Mr. Helmer then left Climax Mine and started the Law Offices of David A. Helmer, a private practice firm in Summit County, Colorado.

For the last several years, the Law Offices of David A. Helmer has grown from just Mr. Helmer to three attorneys and multiple support staff.

The work of the law firm of Helmer Law emphasizes family law matters, e.g., divorce, child support, and custody; criminal defense; all types of civil and commercial litigation; and issues that arise in day to day business operations. Mr. Helmer’s representation of his clients ranges from the simple to the complex, and from the small individual client, with what may have at first seemed to have been a simple matter, to cases involving very complex litigation. His representation ranges from all types of criminal defense, complex commercial and civil litigation, and representation of management. as well as unions and the individual employee.

Mr. Helmer is licensed in the State of Colorado, and he is also licensed in the Federal District Courts of the State of Colorado, the United States Court of Appeals, 10th Circuit (Colorado, Oklahoma, Kansas, New Mexico, Utah, Wyoming and including those portions of the Yellowstone National Park extending into Montana and Idaho), the United States Claims Court, and the Supreme Court of the United States of America.
