Sean P. Schmergel is a native of New York and has resided in Northern Virginia for over 20 years. He currently lives with his family in Arlington, Virginia. Mr. Schmergel practices before the state and federal courts in Virginia and the District of Columbia with a focus on divorce and family law. He represents and counsels clients in all areas of domestic relations, including child custody and visitation disputes, protective orders, marital agreements, equitable distribution of property, alimony and child support matters. For 2012 he was named a "Rising Star" in the area of family law by Virginia Super Lawyers.
Mr. Schmergel serves as a Guardian ad Litem in the Virginia courts, representing children in custody and visitation, and child abuse and neglect cases. He also represents parents accused of civil child abuse or neglect in the Virginia Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Courts, as well as at the administrative level.
Prior to founding Schmergel & Mersberger, PLC, Mr. Schmergel worked for Labat-Anderson, Inc. in Washington, DC where he assisted the United States Department of Justice with all phases of litigation in the Cobell v. Salazar multi-billion dollar class action suit involving alleged mismanagement of Native American trust income.
Before obtaining his law degree, Mr. Schmergel was with McGuire Woods, LLP, in Tysons Corner, Virginia where he worked as an Urban Planner, preparing and presenting land use and zoning cases to local Boards of Supervisors and Planning Commissions in Northern Virginia. He received his law degree in 2000 from George Mason School of Law in Arlington, Virginia and in 1996, he received a B.A. in Government and Politics from George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia.
Mr. Schmergel is a member of the Family Law sections of the Virginia State Bar and the District of Columbia Bar, and he presently serves as President-Elect of the Alexandria Bar Association.
