Michael Hazel is a senior associate in the Litigation/Controversy Department. He joined the firm in 2010.
Practice
Mr. Hazel’s practice focuses on representing individuals and public and private companies before Congress, federal regulators, and other government entities. Most recently, he has represented global financial institutions and senior executives in connection with the Financial Crisis Inquiry Commission and other Congressional investigations into the 2008 financial crisis.
Mr. Hazel also has an active pro bono practice, including an ongoing criminal appeal before the Sixth Circuit, and representation of an American aid worker in the successful effort to secure his release from detention in Haiti.
Past Experience
Prior to joining the firm, Mr. Hazel clerked for the Honorable Dorothy W. Nelson, US Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. He also worked for a public interest law firm in Washington DC, focusing on environmental and natural resource issues. During law school, Mr. Hazel completed internships with the Washington Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights and Urban Affairs, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, and the Counterterrorism Division of Human Rights Watch. As part of a law school clinic, Mr. Hazel obtained a grant of asylum for a Burmese refugee fleeing ethnic and religious persecution.
