Marya Schalk graduated from the University of Tennessee College of Law in 2005. She served as a law clerk for one year to the Honorable Joseph M. Tipton of the Tennessee Court of Criminal Appeals in Knoxville. In 2006, she joined the law firm of Summers & Wyatt, P.C. She has focused on criminal defense, including federal criminal defense, state criminal defense, and appellate work. Marya is a member of the Criminal Justice Act Panel in federal court and takes appointments for federal cases for indigent defendants. She works with Mr. Summers on all of his federal cases and many of his state cases. She has prepared and filed briefs and petitions in the Tennessee Court of Criminal Appeals, the Tennessee Supreme Court, the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals, and the United States Supreme Court. Marya was named to the Mid-South Rising Stars by Super Lawyers in 2011 and 2012.
Marya is from Nashville where she attended Father Ryan High School and Vanderbilt University. She moved to Chattanooga in 2006 to be with her husband, Joe, who grew up in Chattanooga.
