Santarsiero, Daniel M.

Jon Harkness holds an undergraduate degree in biology from Luther College and a PH.D. in the history of science from UW-Madison. He has taught history of science at Cornell University and the university of Minnesota. He also served for several years as the managing editor of the world's leading scholarly journal devoted to the history of science.

Jon is widely published, with pieces appearing in a variety of outlets including the journal of the American medical association, the New England journal of Medicine, the Bulletin of the World health Organization, the Journal of American History, the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Magazine, and Physics in Perspective. His most recent article appeared in the Journal of the patent and Trademark Office Society and has been cited to the U.S. Supreme Court.

Before attending law school, Jon worked for a decade as an independent litigation consultant and expert witness in both product-liability litigation and patent litigation. For his work in product-liability litigation, Jon explored how scientists, policy markers, corporate leaders, and members of the public understood the risks associated with particular products during the past. In patent litigation, Jon used his skills as a historian of science and technology to scour the past for "prior art" that might undercut the validity of a patent being litigated.

Jon helps his clients obtain patent protection for their new ideas and is truly fascinated by inventors and the inventive process. He also embraces the challenges associated with representing clients involved in disputes the occasionally arise over intellectual property matters.

In his spare time, Jon especially enjoys downhill skiing in the winter and boating in the summer with his wife and three kids.
