Rob has been practicing Law in Colorado for the last six years. After graduating from the University of Florida with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Criminology and Law in 1993, Rob moved to Colorado to enjoy the skiing, biking, and outdoor activities that the Rocky Mountains offer. In 1995, he began working as a counselor for dependent and neglected children at a residential treatment facility in Denver. Feeling as though he could work within the legal system to improve the lives of children, Rob decided to law school, where he worked representing dependent and neglected children, as a guardian ad litem (GAL) supervised by the Rocky Mountain Children's Law Center. Rob graduated with a Juris Doctor from the University of Denver, passed the state bar exam, and was admitted to the Colorado Bar in 2005. Rob and Stephen Harkess established their current practice in 2007. His professional affiliations include the Denver Bar Association and the Colorado Bar Association.
Although Harkess & Salter is a general practice, representing clients in bankruptcy, estate planning, landlord-tenant disputes, and other civil litigation, Rob handles most of the family law cases. As a family lawyer, Rob has helped clients with divorces, allocation of parental responsibilities (custody issues for unmarried parents), modification of standing court orders, adoptions, and grandparent visitation. As a starting point, Rob's goal is to help parents find proactive ways to dissolve their marriages with as little conflict as possible. This approach flows from a fundamental belief that the earlier we can help children as their parents separate or divorce the less likely their children are to suffer. Further, parents are in a better position to find an outcome that works for them than is a Judge who has limited time to learn the parties' needs or desires. Of course, in the emotionally charged context of separation and divorce, parties are often unable to reach agreements. In those cases Rob vigorously advocates for his clients' positions.
The family law services Rob provides are based on a continuum of need; and may range from full assistance to working with individuals on an "as needed" basis wherein he provides step-by-step consultation to help clients organize and manage their own cases. Such limited representation can help keep down costs for clients who are comfortable handling their own matters with a little professional assistance.
