Tom Hanes is a member of the firm's Healthcare practice group. With over 26 years of healthcare experience, first as a hospital administrator, and then as a healthcare attorney, Tom has a keen understanding of healthcare providers' legal needs. He holds a graduate degree in healthcare administration and has a working knowledge of daily hospital operations. He focuses his practice in the areas of medical malpractice defense, healthcare litigation, and healthcare information and technology.

With over 20 years of healthcare litigation experience, Tom has represented physicians from every specialty, large and small hospitals and health systems, nursing homes, and other healthcare providers. He has defended hospitals ranging in size from under 50 beds to large university-affiliated healthcare centers, hospitals within large for-profit systems and non-profit community-owned hospitals. The experience he gained as a hospital executive provides insight into daily hospital operations from the departmental level to the governing board level.

Tom has represented hospitals in medical staff matters involving violations of bylaws, rules and regulations, and impaired, incompetent, and disruptive healthcare providers. He has also represented hospitals and individual healthcare providers in front of state regulatory and licensing boards.

Tom has also acted as an advisor/consultant on matters involving health information systems from traditional medical records to electronic medical records and telemedicine.

Tom frequently lectures on topics such as risk management, medical records/confidentiality issues, and preparation and trial of medical malpractice cases. He is also a dispute resolver in the American Health Lawyers Association Alternative Dispute Resolution Service.
