Paul Rafferty practices commercial business litigation including intellectual property, securities, licensing, RICO, breach of fiduciary duty, unfair competition, complex contract, trade secrets, and patent litigation. He has litigated matters in state and federal courts throughout the country. He has concluded numerous international arbitrations before the International Chamber of Commerce and the International Centre for Dispute Resolution (ICDR) in New York, France, and Spain.
Paul has represented Acer, Beckman Coulter, Chevron, Gateway, Globe International, Ventana Medical Systems, and numerous midsize companies. In addition, he provides specific know-how in cases of media interest and has managed media pressure on the following matters: Beach Access vs. Dr. Laura Schlessinger, defamation and First Amendment action; John Doe vs. Cobra, a multimillion dollar Cobra previously owned by Phil Spector; Dvorchak vs. eMachines, one of Orange County's largest securities class actions; and most recently, U.S. Govt. adv. Yanks Air Museum, a highly publicized seizure by the U.S. government of an F-14 aircraft.
Prior to joining Jones Day, Paul advised Alcatel Lucent, Gen Probe, and Wells Fargo in various litigation/arbitration matters.
Paul is a member of the Federal and Orange County Bar Associations. He has served the Orange County Superior Court as a judge pro tem and is presently appointed as a federal settlement officer. Paul served on the board of the Life Sciences Industry Council (LINC) in Orange County for many years, and in 2007, was elected president. When time permits, Paul has managed little league teams, numerous AYSO soccer teams, and served as an assistant coach for JAM Patriots Football.
