I review the facts and develop the case in order to take advantage of errors in the police investigation, and in the subsequent prosecution of the case. Those errors can lead to dismissal of some or all of the charges before trial. I employ the same strategy at trial, if necessary, to exclude evidence and to reduce the charges that the jury will consider. This increases the prospect of an acquittal.
I am sometimes hired to assist other attorneys or to handle the appeal of a conviction. I am experienced appellate attorney, and have successfully sought review in the United States Supreme Court. I have been admitted to practice in the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals since 1985, and in the United State Supreme Court since 2000. Some law firms do not handle criminal appeals. Many do not like to seek pretrial appellate review of rulings on important motions. I do.
The same dedication applies to protecting a client's livelihood when criminal charges are threatened or filed. I will take steps to block any attempt to suspend a client's ability to practice his or her profession through the criminal proceeding. If retained, I can, and have in the past, represented professionals in licensing proceedings before state agencies. Even if not retained to handle related disciplinary proceedings, I appreciate these other issues and will work with a client's counsel to achieve an outcome in the criminal case that will best preserve the client's livelihood.
