Born in Los Angeles and raised in Oakland, John Furstenthal attended the University of California, Berkeley, where he earned a BA with a double major in English and Legal Studies in 1997. He earned four varsity letters playing baseball and was the starting first baseman for three years. He hit .341 his senior year. He then attended Santa Clara University School of Law and earned a JD in 2000. In his last semester of law school, he externed for the Honorable Spencer Williams in the US District Court in San Jose.

John Furstenthal has been practicing law in California since 2000. He lives and works in Lafayette. He is married and has a daughter and son.
