Mr. Phillips was born in Evansville, Indiana. He was admitted to the South Carolina Bar in 1999 and the United States District Court, District of South Carolina in 2002.
Mr. Phillips received his Juris Doctor degree from the University of South Carolina School of Law in 1999. During law school, Mr. Phillips worked as the assistant editor of the South Carolina Environmental Law Journal and as a law clerk for the South Carolina Attorney General. He was also a member of the Order of the Barristers, John Belton O'Neall Inn of Court, and the Moot Court Bar. Mr. Phillips graduated with honor from Baylor University with degrees in economics and business administration. He also earned an MBA from Boston University.
Upon graduation from law school, Mr. Phillips clerked for the Honorable Jasper M. Cureton of the South Carolina Court of Appeals. He joined the Finkel Firm in 2001 practicing in the areas of civil litigation, class actions, and appellate litigation. In addition to an active practice, Mr. Phillips has taught numerous legal education courses on topics including discovery skills, litigation techniques, and the South Carolina Rules of Civil Procedure. He is currently the tort's instructor for the Paralegal Certification Program at the University of South Carolina. His legal publications include Civil Litigation in South Carolina: An Introduction to Rules 1 through 37 SCRCP; District Court Defers to the Department of Energy’s Judgment in Managing the Post-Cold War Nuclear Arsenal, 7 S.C. Envt'l L.J. 111 (1998); and Civil Litigation in South Carolina: Trials, Judgments, Settlements, Defaults and Special Proceedings.
Mr. Phillips served in the United States Army as an Armor and Cavalry Officer. He is an active member of Mt. Horeb United Methodist Church in Lexington. He has represented churches and religious organizations in a variety of litigation matters.
