Jai Pathak currently heads the corporate practice in Jones Day's Los Angeles Office and the M&A practice for the California Region. Prior to relocating to Los Angeles in September 2003, Jai had been the Partner-in-Charge in Singapore and also head of the Firm's India practice (Jones Day is associated with the P&A Law Office, an Indian law firm in New Delhi, which he established in late 1995). Jai also spent seven years practicing in the Firm's offices in Cleveland and New York and seven years in the Firm's London Office.
Jai has extensive corporate experience in U.S., U.K., Indian, and transnational mergers and acquisitions, takeovers, dispositions, privatizations, joint ventures and licensing, infrastructure development, corporate restructurings and reorganizations, and financing transactions. The clients he has represented include governments, major multinational corporations, and financial institutions. Examples of these clients include Abbott Laboratories, ABN AMRO, Alcan Aluminum, American Standard, Asian Development Bank, Bharti Telecom, BIL Group, Caltex, Citibank, Dana Corporation, Eastern Generation, Edison Mission Energy, EMI/Thorne, Escorts, Goldman Sachs, Great Lakes Chemical, Halliburton, Hilton Hotels, the government of India, InterContinental Hotels, International Finance Corporation, Lincoln Electric, Lucent Technologies, MCorpGlobal, MediaCorp, Mitsubishi, Morgan Stanley, Morton International, Motorola, NationsBank/Bank of America, Nortel, North American Coal Corporation, Occidental Petroleum, PPG Industries, Reliance, Rhodia, RJR/Nabisco, Saison Corporation, Salomon Smith Barney, SembCorp Industries, Singapore Technologies and Telemedia, Spice Telecommunications, Telecom Venture Group, TI Group, Timken, Toyota, and Warburg Pincus. From mid-1990 to the end of 1991, he acted as senior counsel to InterContinental Hotels Group and its holding company, Saison Holdings B.V.
Jai is a member of the ABA (International Law and Practice Section and Business Law Section), the International Bar Association (Antitrust and Trade, Business Organizations, and International Sales and Related Commercial Transactions Sections), the Bar Council of Delhi, the Ohio State Bar Association (International Law Committee), the Cleveland Bar Association, The American Society of International Law, and the Indian Society of International Law. He is also a member of Lincoln's Inn, U.K.
Jai won the "Best Corporate Lawyer" award at ALB's Legal Who's Who Singapore 2003. He was also presented the "National Law Day Award 2001" by the Indian Council of Jurists for his unique contribution to the development of Indian corporate law. He has appeared on panels and forums and in seminars, including CNBC's "Managing Asia," "Bloomberg," and "Channel News Asia" in the United States, U.K., Europe, India, and Singapore, lecturing on various legal subjects.
