Richard A. Coad defends individuals and corporations accused of criminal or professional misconduct. He represents clients in federal and state courts; from investigation, through trial and appeal.
Rick joined the firm in November, 2007, after serving as an Associate Federal Defender in both Madison and Green Bay. He has extensive federal court experience in both the Western and Eastern Districts of Wisconsin. Rick has represented clients in matters ranging from illegal firearms possession and drug conspiracies to complicated fraud cases. In order to provide the most effective defense of his clients, Rick believes in knowing his client well, exploring all of the facts of the case, and looking for opportunities to litigate legal issues to improve the posture of the case. In consistently taking this approach, he has developed a solid motions practice. A successful motion can lead to the exclusion of evidence or the dismissal of charges.
Additionally, Rick has expertise in appellate litigation. He has briefed and argued cases in the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit. Recently, he was lead counsel on Logan v. United States, a case involving the federal firearms law, which he argued in the United States Supreme Court.
In recognition of Rick’s work, he has been named one of Super Lawyer®’s Rising Stars.
