Matt O’Brien was born in Wichita, Kansas in 1977. Growing up, Matt loved playing all sports including baseball, basketball, tennis, and skiing. He graduated from Wichita East High School in 1995.
After graduating high school, Matt attended the University of Kansas where he majored in Journalism with an emphasis in marketing. Having been raised in a family of lawyers, Matt knew that he would follow the family footsteps and become a lawyer. In 1999, Matt enrolled at Washburn University Law School in Topeka, Kansas. Matt and his family would travel to Colorado every year to ski in the winters and enjoy the mountains in the summers. For his last year of law school, Matt transferred to Denver University to complete his legal education.
Following his graduation from law school, Matt began his legal career as a Deputy District Attorney in Lamar, Colorado. As a Deputy DA, Matt tried many cases before juries and Judges.
After three years as a prosecutor, Matt moved to Denver to begin his career at The Sawaya Law Firm. Matt has worked in the Workers’ Compensation and Social Security Departments since 2006 and has represented hundreds of injured workers and Social Security claimants. Matt is a member of the Colorado Bar Association, the Workers’ Compensation Education Association and the Professionals in Workers’ Compensation, where he was a Board Member from 2009-2011, including his service as the Membership Director from 2009-2010.
When not working, Matt enjoys playing golf, skiing and attending almost any sporting event.
