Omar L. Nelson is a native of Vicksburg, Mississippi where he resides with his wife, Melanie Nelson. Together they have two children: Morgan Alexis Nelson and Ryan Omar Nelson. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Thurman Nelson, Jr. of Vicksburg, Mississippi
Mr. Nelson received his primary and secondary education in the Vicksburg-Warren School District. He is a graduate of The University of Southern Mississippi ("USM"), where he received a Bachelor's of Science degree in Political Science in 1994 with an emphasis in English. While a student at USM, he received numerous awards and honors, including, Who's Who Among American Colleges and Universities, Hall of Fame, Dean's List, and Lambda Sigma Honor Society. Most notably, in 1993, Mr. Nelson was elected president of the Student Government Association (SGA).
Upon completing his undergraduate degree, he received a Master's degree in 1996 in Public Policy and Administration from Mississippi State University. Mr. Nelson furthered his education at Mississippi College School of Law where he received a Doctor of Jurisprudence degree in 2000. He is admitted to practice before all state and federal courts in Mississippi and the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals.
Mr. Nelson's practice areas include medical malpractice, premises liability, insurance bad faith, nursing home litigation, and product liability. He has fought in earnest to ensure that the rights of the most vulnerable in our society are protected -- the disenfranchised, poor, elderly, and individuals preyed upon by corporations. As a result, Mr. Nelson has successfully obtained substantial settlements for his clients.
He is a member of the Magnolia Bar Association, American Association for Justice ("AAJ"), Hinds County Bar Association, Warren County Bar Association and Mississippi Association for Justice ("MAJ"). Mr. Nelson has served as parliamentarian, secretary, treasurer, and vice president of MAJ. He is a Barrister of the Charles Clark Chapter of the American Inns of Court and serves as a Commissioner on the Mississippi State Supreme Court Commission on Impaired Lawyers.
Mr. Nelson served on the faculty of the National Business Institute and presented seminars to lawyers and paralegals on various legal topics, such as "Trial Preparation From Start to Finish for Mississippi Paralegals" and "Using Medical Records to Prove Your Case in Mississippi". In addition, he lectured on "Premises Liability in Mississippi" for Barristers Educational Services.
Mr. Nelson currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Vicksburg Convention and Visitors Bureau and the Mississippi Volunteer Lawyers Project of the Mississippi Bar. He serves on the Board of Trustees of Clover Valley M.B. Church in Warren County and, in 2005, he chaired the Small Business Committee for the United Way Campaign of Vicksburg-Warren County.
