He works with public and private companies of all sizes and stages of development, with a heavy concentration in venture-funded start-ups. He also works with a broad a spectrum of entities, including venture capital funds, investment banks and ultra-high-net-worth individuals, that invest in, or evaluate, life sciences companies and technologies.
While Louis’s approach to IP issues is tailored to each client, he emphasizes the integration of IP with business, scientific, product, regulatory, financing, and competitive concerns. His clients typically ask for comprehensive strategic counseling on a variety of matters, including designing and securing worldwide patent estates, competitive analysis, freedom to operate analysis, life-cycle management, operational and formal opinion work, license drafting and negotiations, the design and maintenance of collaborations, Hatch-Waxman issues, due diligence on target IP and technology, due diligence on potential collaboration, and IP issues related to financing, such as the construction of patent strategies and estates in anticipation of due diligence by sources of capital.
