Like all of the partners at Murphy, Volbrecht & Kuehn, SC, law was not my first career. I began my working life in construction, working for my Grandfather. For those who have worked for family, you will know that you generally have to be twice as skilled to be considered half as good. This was no different for me. This was one of the original experiences that developed my work ethic, which is comprised of, never start a job unless you intend to do it, well.
This work ethic, that I first learned from my family, then through sports, has helped forge the type of lawyer I am today. A person who is focused on doing the best job possible for my clients. My first job as an attorney was at Leece & Phillips, sc in Elkhorn. It was there that I learned the fundamentals of Family and Divorce law. I had also been a municipal prosecutor for both The City of Elkhorn, as well as the Village of Sharon. While it was a great experience to work at Leece & Phillips, I knew that there was more that I wanted to accomplish, so I entered into a partnership with Michael Meurer, and formed the law firm of Meurer & Murphy. It was from there that my old college and law school friend, Paul Volbrecht and I decided to form our partnership, when Mike moved to Colorado. Over the years we had met another attorney, Chris Kuehn, with whom we found our styles, values, and priorities highly compatible and brought him into the firm.
My theory of practicing law is, treat the client's problem with as much importance as if it were your own. Treat your client as if he/she is your friend, and it is better to win a client, then send a bill, and resolve the problem with as much efficiency as possible.
I have also devoted myself to helping the community, because it is not only important to help my clients, but the community at large. I have been a past president of the Jaycees of Elkhorn, where my family and I make our home.
