Laura Monty is an advocate for families who need assistance navigating through the complexities of the legal system during the trying times in their life. Laura works to achieve outcomes that families can live with after the court system is no longer involved. From personal experience, Laura understands the effect that divorce can have on all members of a family, especially children. Therefore, Laura strives to minimize conflict while working towards a long-term resolution.
Laura’s education, training and background have emphasized Family Law. After Laura completed her undergraduate studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, she joined a Family Law firm in Madison, Wisconsin as a legal assistant. From this experience, Laura saw first-hand the challenges that families face every day when they are involved in the legal system. Laura graduated from the University of Denver Sturm College of Law where she focused her studies primarily on Family Law and Alternative Dispute Resolution as well as the tax and estate planning implications of divorce.
During Laura’s second year of law school, she worked as a legal intern for the Honorable Jack W. Berryhill in the First Judicial District of Colorado. In her last year of school, she worked as a student attorney with the Rocky Mountain Children’s Law Center where she served as Guardian ad Litem for children in Dependency and Neglect and Juvenile Delinquency cases. In this role, Laura frequently appeared before judges and magistrates in Jefferson County. Laura also co-presented with David Littman at the 2012 Family Law Institute in Vail on the role of the Guardian ad Litem, Guardian, and Conservator in family law cases.
While Laura understands that not all cases can be resolved outside of the courtroom, she is an advocate for alternative methods of resolving disputes. Laura is trained in Collaborative Law and is certified in mediation. Laura feels that these alternatives to litigation provide other options to clients who want to resolve Family Law disputes in a timely and less adversarial manner. However, when traditional litigation is necessary, Laura is the strong advocate that her clients need.
Laura’s practice is focused primarily on Family Law, particularly in the areas of dissolution of marriage, allocation of parental responsibilities, post-decree issues (including modification of child support and/or parenting time and contempt issues), adoption, and collaborative law. However, Laura has experience in Juvenile Law as well. Laura is a certified mediator and enjoys working with parties who would like to attempt to reach resolution outside of the courtroom. Laura also offers co-mediation services with Dr. Jennifer Fontaine, a licensed psychologist with the Colorado Family Center.
In Laura’s free time, she enjoys spending time outside hiking, skiing, and taking advantage of the beauty of Colorado. Laura is married and has two chocolate labs named Dayton and Rocky. She also enjoys traveling and spending time with family and friends.
