Joel S. Miliband, a member of the Firm, concentrates his practice in the areas of complex business litigation in all forums and corporate insolvency matters. He graduated with honors from the University of California, Riverside in 1973 with Bachelor of Arts degrees in Political Science and Business Economics. He received his Juris Doctor, Magna Cum Laude, in 1977 from the University of San Diego, School of Law.
Mr. Miliband is one of four attorney members of the Judicial Council of California, the policy making body of the California Courts, the largest court system in the nation. From 2006-2008 Mr. Miliband served as the Southern California Co-Chair of the statewide Bench-Bar Coalition. In 2005, Mr. Miliband was Vice President of the State Bar of California and served as a member of the Board of Governors of the State Bar of California from 2002 to 2005. In 2000, he was the President of the Orange County Bar Association, and was President of the Desert Bar Association in 1988. Mr. Miliband served as a Judge Pro Tem in the Riverside County Superior and Municipal Courts from 1981 to 1990. He has been a regular panelist and lecturer for the State Bar of California, various local Bar Associations, and Continuing Education of the Bar.
In 1988 he was appointed to the Committee on Mandatory Fee Arbitration for the State Bar of California and was chair of that Committee in 1990 and 1991. Mr. Miliband served as the Presiding Arbitrator for the State Bar of California Mandatory Fee Arbitration Program from 1993-1996. He is also a Master of the Bench in the American Inns of Court, is a member of the American Bar Association, the Federal Bar Association, the American Bankruptcy Institute, the Commercial Law League of America, the California Receiver's Forum, the Orange County Bar Association (President, 2000; President-Elect, 1999; Treasurer, 1998; Secretary, 1997; Member, Board of Directors, 1994-1996), and the Association of Business Trial Lawyers (Member, Board of Directors 2002 to 2005; Editor-in-Chief of the Orange County ABTL Report, 2002-2003).
In 1995 Mr. Miliband was appointed to the United States Bankruptcy Court's Mediation Panel for the Central District of California and in 1998 he was selected as a Delegate to the Ninth Circuit Judicial Conference by members of the Federal Judiciary.
Mr. Miliband has been awarded the designation as a 2006 and 2009 Southern California Super Lawyer for his high degree of peer recognition and professional achievement. Mr. Miliband is a member of the Newport Business Forum and the Newport Beach Sunrise Rotary Club.
