Alex focuses her practice on complex business and commercial litigation matters, with an emphasis on federal court practice. She has significant experience in breach of contract actions, securities fraud, business torts, and unfair competition. Representative clients include Mattel, Santa Fe Natural Tobacco, and Compulink Management Center.
Alex also has experience in white-collar criminal matters and regulatory and enforcement proceedings. In particular, Alex has experience in conducting internal investigations and has represented individuals and companies in white-collar criminal investigations and civil enforcement actions. Most recently, Alex represented a client accused of export violations under the Bureau of Industry and Security's Export Administration Regulations.
Alex also has substantial experience in intellectual property litigation involving patent, trademark, and copyright infringement as well as trade secrets and unfair competition. She has represented clients in intellectual property litigation in a variety of industries including computer software, flashlights, X-ray screening devices, and toys for children. Recently, Alex represented a video game publishing company against its former employees and a former consultant who were engaged in setting up a competing business using their former employer's trade secrets. Alex also has performed a large-scale due diligence review and evaluation of a client's intellectual property portfolio in connection with a major investment and acquisition and has counseled the client regarding the same.
In 2006, Alex was awarded the Pro Bono Volunteer Attorney of the Year Award by the Harriett Buhai Center for Family Law along with a team of Jones Day attorneys. The award was made in recognition of her successful representation of a victim of domestic violence in an international custody dispute. Alex is currently pro bono counsel in a custody case in the District of Columbia Superior Court on behalf of an individual seeking custody of a 5-year-old child who was left in her care since birth.
Alex is a proficient Spanish speaker and has represented monolingual Spanish speaking clients. While in law school, Alex volunteered her time at El Centro Immigration Clinic, participated in moot court, and served as a teaching assistant in the first-year writing class.
