Bill McPherson was born in Wilmington, and grew up in Pamlico County, North Carolina. He graduated from Duke University, where he was an Angier B. Duke Scholar. He received a J.D. with Honors from the Law School at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he was Articles Editor of the North Carolina Law Review and was elected to the Order of the Coif, the national legal honorary society. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve, and was discharged with the rank of Sergeant.
After graduating from Law School, Bill was a Trial Attorney in the Tax Division, U.S. Department of Justice, and then District Administrative Assistant for Nick Galifianakis, M.C. He has been in the private practice of law in Durham since 1973. He is been admitted to practice before the United States Supreme Court, the U,S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit, the U.S. Tax Court, and the U.S. Courts for the Eastern and Middle Districts of North Carolina and the District of South Dakota.
He is a Board Certified Specialist in Estate Planning and Probate Law, and a Fellow in the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel. He is a past president of the Durham-Orange Estate Planning Council, and a member of the American Bar Association, and its Real Property, Trust and Estate Law Section, and of the North Carolina Bar Association and its Estate Planning and Fiduciary Law Section.
Bill's practice areas include estate planning, charitable giving, trust and estate administration and trust and estate litigation.
