Julie Matonich graduated with honors in history from Northwestern University in 1991. She earned her law degree from the George Washington National Law Center in Washington, D.C. in 1994.
In 1994, Ms. Matonich was awarded a fellowship from the Organization of American States to study the laws of domestic violence in Argentina. She is fluent in Spanish.
Ms. Matonich returned to Minnesota in 1995 for a judicial clerkship and entered private practice in Minnesota in 1996. She is admitted to practice in Minnesota and U.S. District Court for the District of Minnesota.
Ms. Matonich handles a broad range of litigation, including personal injury, automobile and trucking accidents, products liability, medical negligence, wrongful death, and employment cases. She has worked on many multi-million dollar civil cases. She has defended clients charged with criminal offenses including white-collar crimes, criminal sexual conduct, drug offenses, and homicides. She has tried numerous cases in state and federal courts.
Ms. Matonich has been named a "Rising Star" by Minnesota Law and Politics magazine. She has also been named a "Super Lawyer"—among the top 5 percent of lawyers in Minnesota—by the same publication.
Among the professional organizations to which Ms. Matonich belongs are the American Association for Justice, the Minnesota Association for Justice, the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, and the Minnesota Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers. She has served as a member of the Board of Directors for the Minnesota Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers.
Ms. Matonich is actively engaged in volunteer work. She currently does pro bono legal work for Advocates for Human Rights. Ms. Matonich also serves on the Advisory Board of the Page Education Foundation, which provides scholarships to students of color. In 2006, the Page Education Foundation honored her with its annual "Giving Award."
