Martinez, Tony

David P. Martin is a 1987 Magna Cum Laude graduate of the University of Houston at Clear Lake. He attended the University of Alabama School of Law on an academic scholarship. In law school, he was honored as a Hugo Black Scholar and served on the Board of Editors for The Journal of the Legal Profession, an ethics publication for lawyers. He graduated in 1992 with honors in the top 10% of his class and was inducted into the Order of the Coif.

David is a member of the Alabama State Bar, the Tuscaloosa County Bar Association, and the federal court bars for the Southern, Middle and Northern Districts of Alabama, the 11^th Circuit of Appeals, the American Bar Association and the Alabama Association for Justice. He currently serves as president of the board for Focus on Senior Citizens in Tuscaloosa County, Alabama and serves in the Alabama State Bar Volunteer Lawyers Program. He also served on the board of editors for the Alabama Lawyer, a publication received by all lawyers licensed in Alabama, and has chaired the Alabama State Bar Task Force on Alternative Methods of Dispute Resolution which oversaw editing of the manual produced by this task force. He has been named by Alabama Superlawyers Magazine as one of the top attorneys in Alabama in the area of Employee Benefits/ERISA law for 2008. Only 5% of the lawyers in the state are named by the publication and David is the only Employee Benefits/ERISA attorney named who solely represents employees and their loved ones.

He has litigated in all state and federal courts as well as before the 11^th Circuit Court of Appeals, the Alabama Supreme Court and the Alabama Court of Civil Court of Appeals. He is a member of a church in the Tuscaloosa County area and contributes as a teacher and plays instruments. He has also made periodic presentations to various groups including seminars for the Georgia State Bar and the Alabama Bar, and the Multiple Sclerosis Group for Tuscaloosa County.

David began focusing the majority of his practice on ERISA over ten years ago, and has been handling ERISA claims since 1992. In fact, his very first case after passing the bar involved resolving a long-term disability claim in September 1992.

For the year 2009, David was selected by Strathmore's Who's Who Worldwide as Professional of the Year in the area of Law - Employee Benefits. This is another honor recognizing the determination and diligence of David's representation in the area of employee benefits.
