Rick is a shareholder in the firm of Briggs and Morgan, Professional Association. He is based in our Minneapolis office and served previously as the firm’s president from 2002-2007. Rick is a member of the Business Litigation Section. His practice involves:
Before entering private practice with Briggs and Morgan in 1977, Rick handled civil and criminal litigation for the Minnesota attorney general’s office. He became the assistant solicitor general, where he was responsible for major civil and criminal litigation for the state. During his tenure, Rick tried two first-degree murder cases and defended a major civil rights case.
Most recently, Rick served as lead counsel in a matter involving legal malpractice claims. The case was successfully argued before the Minnesota Supreme Court and resulted in a significant ruling for Minnesota attorneys facing possible malpractice claims from non-client third parties.
In his experience with securities litigation, Rick has successfully defended a $100-million securities fraud case. He is also currently involved in defending an officer in securities derivative and class action litigation.
In the community, Rick serves as director and member of the executive committee of the Fund for the Legal Aid Society. He is also a founding director of Twin Cities Diversity in Practice. He was recently named as a Minnesota “Local Litigation Star” in the debut edition of Benchmark: Litigation. Rick has been listed in Minnesota Super Lawyers, as seen in Minnesota Law & Politics .
Rick received his B.A. from the University of Minnesota and his law degree from the University of Minnesota Law School. He joined Briggs in 1977.
