Karl Maersch practices in the area of intellectual property law, including patent, trademark, copyright, trade secret, and unfair competition litigation. He has represented Jones Day clients in state and federal courts throughout the country, the Court of Appeals to the Federal Circuit, as well as in the International Trade Commission. He also has experience in prosecution, counseling, and licensing. Karl handles cases involving diverse technologies such as image processing, image compression, wireless communications, cellular phones, semiconductors, semiconductor processing technology, surgical equipment, bar code scanners, imaging equipment, engine components, computer software, and Internet-based applications.
Karl is a member of the Firm's eDiscovery Committee and was responsible for developing a firmwide training program concerning the revised Federal Rules of Civil Procedure. Karl regularly counsels Jones Day clients on electronic discovery issues, and he has experience in methods of noninvasive data and document collection, active review of data, as well as methods to control data volume in order to minimize the cost to process, review, and produce the data.
Karl is active in professional and community-based organizations. He is on the board of directors of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Cleveland (program committee chair, 2005-2006) and was recently elected to the board of directors of Tremont West Development Corporation (housing committee chair, 2008-present). He is a member of the Cleveland Intellectual Property Law Association (treasurer, 2003-2004), the Intellectual Property Law Section of the Cleveland Metropolitan Bar Association (executive council, 2004-2006), and the IP Advisory Board of the John Marshall Law School Center for Intellectual Property Law.
