Jawaid qualified in 1988 and became a partner in 1989 at the firm where he undertook his training. He left in 1995 and joined Jane Coker & Co where he became a partner until leaving in 1998 to co-found Luqmani Thompson & Partners.
Jawaid Luqmani is renowned for his litigation expertise across the spectrum of public law, immigration and education law and peers regard him as one of the leading lights in these specialised fields. His reputation for tenacity has been established through representing clients before the High Court, Court of Appeal, Supreme Court (previously the House of Lords), European Court of Justice and European Court of Human Rights.
Jawaid Luqmani has been a member of the Immigration Law Practitioners' Association (ILPA) since 1991. He served on its Executive Committee between 1997-2007, and was Treasurer from 2002 to 2007. Jawaid also held the post of Director for the same period. He is currently Co-Convenor of ILPA's "Offences" subcommittee and regularly trains immigration lawyers for ILPA. Jawaid has represented ILPA at many meetings with the government, judiciary and other official bodies.
Jawaid was a member of the advisory panel of the Office of the Immigration Service Commissioner from November 2001 to August 2005.
Jawaid has been an Assessor for the Immigration Accreditation Scheme since 1999. He was also appointed as Chief Assessor of the Scheme by the Law Society as from 1 January 2011, being one of only a small number of Advanced Level Accredited advisers in the UK.
He provides training to various organisations including local authorities, NGOs, other legal practitioners and community groups, and contributes regularly to Legal Action Bulletin.
Jawaid was nominated for the Immigration Legal Aid Practitioner of the Year Award in 2008 and has appeared in every edition of the "leaders in their field" category in immigration in Chambers and Partners since 1997.
He was approved by the SRA as Compliance Officer for Finance and Administration within the firm as from 1 January 2013 and has provided training to other lawyers on regulatory issues over the last 12 months.
