Jeff is originally from Salt Lake City, Utah. At the age of 19, he moved to Chile for two years, where he became fluent in Spanish. He returned to the U.S. to attend the University of Utah. In 2002, he graduated with a Bachelors of Science degree in Exercise/Sports Science and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology with a minor in Spanish. Jeff then relocated to North Carolina to attend North Carolina Central University School of Law where he graduated with high honors, earning his Juris Doctor degree in 2006.

Jeff began his legal career that same year when he was selected through the competitive U.S. Department of Justice's Attorney Generals Honors Program to work with the Executive Office for Immigration Review (EOIR). Jeff worked with EOIR as a Judicial Law Clerk with the Denver, Colorado and Salt Lake City, Utah Immigration Courts and the Aurora and Colorado Detention Facility where he assisted four Immigration Judges in adjudicating removal proceedings. He was also in charge of the intern program for these courts. In 2007, Jeff was promoted to Attorney Advisor and six months later, he accepted a position with the Newark, New Jersey Immigration Court and the Elizabeth, New Jersey Detention Facility where he assisted nine Immigration Judges in carrying out similar duties.

In 2008, Jeff moved back to North Carolina to work for a prestigious immigration law firm in Charlotte. While there, he represented clients in all types of immigration matters including removal proceedings, employer sanctions, employment-based visas, family immigrant visa petitions, consular processing, and waiver applications. Jeff has won several cases before the Board of Immigration Appeals on behalf of his clients. He has also been admitted to practice before the U.S. District Court for the Western District of North Carolina and he has experience in filing causes of action in federal court against immigration agencies. McKinney Justice Perry & Coalter was proud to have Jeff join our team in 2011 as an important member of our immigration law division.

Jeff frequently writes and lectures on topics related to current immigration issues. His legal publications include an article published in North Carolina Central University's Law Journal entitled "Cutting Undocumented Alien Employment Using the Spine of a Knife: How The Fourth Circuit Failed to Adequately Use Title VII to Strengthen IRCA in Egbuna v. Time Life Libraries, Inc.," 28 N.C. CENT. L.J. 87 (2005).

A selection of his lectures includes the following:

  • "Adjustment of Status and Criminal Grounds of Removability," 2010 Immigration Series, Mecklenburg County Bar, Charlotte, NC, February 24, 2010.
  • "Stays of Removal – Who Can Issue and Effect of a Stay," Immigration Workshop for the Bench and Bar, Mecklenburg County Bar, Charlotte, NC, March 13, 2009.
  • "Current Reality of Immigration Law," Construction Financial Management Association, Charlotte, NC, November 11, 2008.
