Derek began his legal career following a successful career in medical sales. After graduating from law school, Derek relocated from Orlando, FL to Tampa, FL where he accepted a legal intern position with the Florida Attorney General's Office. Upon being admitted to the Florida Bar, Derek accepted an attorney position with the Attorney General's Office for Child Support Enforcement. While working with the Attorney General's office, Derek was responsible for hundreds of cases involving child support establishment and enforcement. After working with the Attorney General's Office, Derek accepted a job with a private law firm that practiced exclusively in family law. While there, Derek expanded on his knowledge base by working on all aspects of family law. Derek handled complex, high asset dissolution of marriage proceedings, timesharing/custody issues, child support, spousal support, paternity and modification actions. At that point, Derek was offered an opportunity to join Ferraez LLC as a partner and managing attorney for the family law practice in the firm. In August 2010, Derek accepted the offer and Ferraez & Lucas Attorneys and Counselors at Law was created.
