Jon grew up in Wilkes County and graduated from East Wilkes High School in 1998. During his time at East High, he excelled at football and baseball. Upon graduation from East Wilkes High, Jon attended Wilkes Community College and received an Associate in Arts in 2000. While there Jon also played baseball for both the College and the American Legion. Jon attended Appalachian State University in Boone and received a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice in 2002. During his time at ASU, Jon interned at the Watauga County District Attorney’s Office, which compelled him towards a career in the law. In 2002, Jon enrolled and began attending Appalachian School of Law in Grundy, Virginia. While in Grundy, Jon volunteered time at a local daycare in the community, was involved with several school organizations, and played on the ASL softball team. Jon also performed an internship with the Iredell County District Attorney’s Office during law school and made several long lasting friendships with both the local defense bar and many of the prosecutors of the county. After graduation, Jon opened The Law Office of Jon W. Welborn, PLLC, which has progressed into Gottholm, Welborn and Benton, PLLC, today.
Jon has been a partner since 2005, primarily focusing his practice in family law. As a family law attorney, Jon handles a variety of cases which include all domestic situations, absolute divorces, child custody/support, post-separation support/alimony and equitable distribution of marital property. Jon also represents clients in criminal matters, including representation on charges from minor traffic violations to serious felonies.
He is a member of the North Carolina, Iredell County and Alexander County Bars.
Jon was born September 14, 1980. He is the son of the late Perry Mitchell Welborn and Patricia Poteat Welborn of the southeastern Wilkes County area. Jon’s mother, Pat is a retired special education teacher and continues to reside at the home place of Jon. Jon and his wife Amber now reside in Davie County, North Carolina. Amber is a nursing educator at Forsyth Technical in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. In February of 2010, Jon and Amber were blessed to have their first child, Isabelle.
