Lewellen graduated from the University of Texas, in 1970, with a degree in Political Science. He subsequently attended the University of Texas School of Law, while serving as Governor Preston Smith’s Student Affairs Advisor for all college campuses within the state.

Thereafter, with approval of the State Board of Law Examiners, he successfully completed the work/study program required for bar eligibility. During such time, he also remained actively involved in the statewide political campaign of Lt. Governor Bill Hobby, while also employed with the law firm of Kent Hance.  Having passed the Texas bar examination, Lewellen was admitted to the practice of law by the Texas Supreme Court, in 1973.

Lewellen is also authorized to practice law before the United States District Court, Northern District of Texas, and the United States Court of Appeals, 5th Circuit.  He has been admitted to practice before the United States Supreme Court, since 1977.

C.O. McMillan, a sole practitioner for 45 years, honored Lewellen by forming the professional corporation of McMillan & Lewellen, a litigation firm handling the legal needs of clients throughout North Central Texas. The law firm partners have enjoyed an active courtroom presence and professionalism covering the last 88 years.

Lewellen’s professional memberships have included the Association of Trial Lawyers of America, the American Association for Justice, the American Bar Association, the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, the Texas Bar Association, the College of the State Bar, the Texas Trial Lawyers Association, the Texas Criminal Defense Lawyers Association, the Erath County Bar Association, the Hood County Bar Association, and the Texas Center for Legal Ethics and Professionalism.

A select group of judges and attorneys evaluated Lewellen and awarded him the highest possible rating given to a Texas attorney, for professional excellence, ability, and ethical standards.

Lewellen is honored to be included in the top 1/3 of 1% of attorneys elected to the Texas Bar Foundation.  Nominations are based upon outstanding contributions to the legal profession.  Lewellen’s inclusion is one of the highest honors that can be bestowed upon a member of the State Bar of Texas.

Lewellen is also listed in the Bar Register of Preeminent Lawyers™, having been selected as one of the most distinguished attorneys in the United States.

Lewellen was most recently named as a Senior Counsel, in the College of Master Advocacy and Barristers, an international legal honor society.

Perhaps Lewellen’s greatest honor is bestowed by his former clients, who consistently recommend Lewellen because of his courtroom experience, his honesty and integrity, and his reputation as the meanest dog around.
In 2012 LEWELLEN LAW was again rated the Best Law Firm by voters in the Readers' Choice Awards.

Criminal defense is defined by Lewellen’s relentless fight for each client accused of a felony or misdemeanor, and his vigorous protection of constitutional rights and freedom.  Lewellen expanded his working knowledge of the criminal law system by previously serving as a regional attorney for the Texas Municipal Police Association, the professional voice for all Texas law enforcement agencies.

Recognizing his high ethical standards and mastery of criminal law, presiding District Judges have selected Lewellen to serve as “Special Prosecutor” in numerous trials in Erath, Hood, Hamilton, Bosque, Comanche, Palo Pinto, and Eastland counties.

Lewellen has also been named as the criminal defense “go to” attorney in a survey of attorneys in this area, conducted by “Texas Lawyer,” a weekly publication.

Over 1200 newspaper articles have been published in Texas and/or nationally which have featured Lewellen's trial work in high profile cases.

Lewellen’s speaking engagements have included presentations to bar associations, judges, and law enforcement agencies.

Lewellen’s divorce trial work has ranged from a .22 rifle and high school yearbook to estates valued at over 20 million dollars.  Lewellen is committed to enforcing each client’s property rights while proactively protecting their interests.

Lewellen’s civil trial work involves individuals and businesses encountering a wide variety of civil disputes, some of which can be resolved through mediation.  Lewellen has also taken thousands of civil cases to trial, winning favorable jury verdicts and settlements in cases throughout the State of Texas, with proven results in personal injury and wrongful death, negligence claims, as well as disputes involving contracts, business relationships, and will contests.

Lewellen’s work ethic in civil trials has been recognized by his inclusion in the Million Dollar Advocates Forum®, one of the most prestigious groups of trial lawyers in America.  Less than 1% of litigators in the United States are included as members.

Lewellen actively serves as the Tarleton State University Student Legal Advisor, assisting both students and faculty with legal issues. He has served in this capacity for over 30 consecutive years. He has also remained an active member of the President’s Circle, promoting scholastic achievement and scholarships at the University.
