I spent the majority of my youth in Vancouver after returning from Germany in the 1970s where my father was stationed in the US Army. I earned a college degree at Whitman College in Walla, Walla, a MBA and law degree in Houston Texas before returning home. My Clark County roots run deep as my family moved here in the 1800s. My grandfather was a Clark County Superior Court Judge for 21 years, my grandmother was a local math teacher, my father is a dentist (who dislikes attorneys) and there are several attorneys in the family.
I have three children and have been married to my wife since 1987. I have learned from experience that marriage and raising children is tough. It is quite common for me to ask clients to explore all options. Over the years, there have been many times when I have advised clients that their issues should be resolved with patience or counseling rather than legal action. A simple reassurance that an individual's problems are common often gives people permission not to beat up on themselves or condemn their partner. For example, make clients aware of the impact of legal proceedings upon children and other parties. I want my clients to fully understand and be responsible for their decisions.
I am not the right attorney to use for legal proceedings to punish the other side. It is expensive, usually produces little results, makes money for the attorneys and creates negative, unintended consequences.
I recognize that attorney fees are expensive. Like other attorneys, I am witnessing many people using internet advice or representing themselves. This approach often leads to bad mistakes and even to situations that cannot be helped by the time an attorney is consulted. I recommend that you try to consult with an attorney in the beginning of your case as the initial decisions by the court are often the most important ones.
I am an avid Portland Timber fan, support local charities (library, shelters, boy scouts, and youth sports) and try to run and stay active—the key work is try.
