Russell specializes in fraud-related matters, handling mainly complex, multijurisdictional civil litigation cases as well as some white-collar criminal cases. He also maintains an active bankruptcy litigation practice.
Russell's litigation practice covers a wide range of matters, with a focus on commercial disputes and class actions. He has represented clients in federal and state court proceedings, drafted discovery-related and dispositive motions, taken and defended depositions, and supervised other aspects of the discovery process. Representative clients include Laidlaw International, Omnicom Group, Koch Industries, Ernst & Young, R.J. Reynolds, and Bridgestone/Firestone.
Russell's white-collar practice involves the representation of clients who have been accused of various white-collar crimes, including accounting fraud, securities fraud, and anticompetitive actions. He also has conducted internal investigations and compliance reviews for corporate clients.
In addition, Russell represents pro bono clients in asylum and immigration matters. Since mid-2003, he has represented a Liberian national who was tortured and made to watch the brutal execution of his son at the hands of former Liberian President Charles Taylor. Russell helped obtain political asylee status for this client and each of the client's nine family members. In August 2007, after overcoming numerous obstacles, bypassing several apparent dead ends, and more than four and a half years of effort, this client and his family were finally reunited in the United States.
