Kuhn, Daniel Paul

Paul Kritzer has almost 40 years of legal experience.  He joined Bucher Law Group, LLC as Of Counsel at its inception in September 2010.

Paul was the General Counsel and Corporate Secretary in a 24-year career at Journal Communications, Inc. (Milwaukee).  During this tenure, Paul handled all legal operations for the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, 9 television stations (including WTMJ-TV), 35 radio stations, 45 weekly newspapers, two commercial printing companies, a direct mail company and a telecommunications operation.  Paul worked closely with editors and reporters, reviewing news reports prior to publication or broadcast and litigating open meetings and open records matters.  Paul handled more than 40 acquisitions and several divestitures valued between $500,000 and $5 million.  Paul developed an expertise in libel and privacy, copyright and trademark, environmental (Superfund), advertising, compliance with government regulations, employment, contracts, litigation management, employment and restrictive covenants.

Paul came to Waukesha in 1980 as the Editor and Publisher of the Waukesha Freeman.  At that time it had 85 employees, annual revenues of $5 million and daily circulation of 26,000.  In 1981, the Freeman won 19 awards for journalistic excellence.  Paul left the Freeman in 1983 after a change in ownership.

Paul was Associate General Counsel for the Des Moines Register (Iowa) in 1977-1980.  Paul successfully argued the invasion of privacy case of Robin Woody Howard v. Des Moines Register, before the Iowa Supreme Court, 283 N.W.2d 289 (Iowa 1979), cert. denied, 445 U.S. 904 (1980).  Previously, he had been on the Republican counsel for the Small Business Committee of the U.S. House of Representatives and an aide and speechwriter to U.S. Rep. Silvio Conte (R.-Mass.) in 1972-1977.

A native of Buffalo, NY, Paul graduated from Williams College (Political Science), Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism and Georgetown University Law Center.  A paper that Paul had written in 1971 won a national award for the best student paper in copyright, trademark or patent law.  Paul served more than 3 years in the US Army in 1965-1968 as an intelligence agent and civil affairs officer and earned the rank of 1st Lieutenant.

Attorney Paul Kritzer is a frequent lecturer on Media Law at Marquette Law School, Marquette University and University of Wisconsin-Wisconsin.  On September 22, 2011, Paul spoke at the "Law School for Digital Journalists" at Harvard Law School.  Paul is a director of the Banyan Project; an operation of Harvard Law School's Berkman Center for Internet & Society that is fostering cooperative efforts to rejuvenate journalism.Paul is also a member of the Ethics Committee for the City of Waukesha.

Paul resides in Waukesha County with his wife Fran. They have two adult daughters.
