Mariana Toledo-Hermina joined Rawls, Scheer, Foster & Mingo, PLLC, in the winter of 2012 and practices exclusively in the area of immigration law. Mariana came to immigration law after working extensively with immigrants’ communities in the context of health education and community organizing.
Professional
Mariana graduated from the University of Puerto Rico, with a BA in Modern Languages. After graduation, she moved to Washington, DC to start what would become her life work, serving immigrant communities through her work as an educator, a community organizer and a legal advocate.
Mariana has a combination of immigration and criminal law experience working with underserved communities, as well as practice and teaching experience in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools System and a strong commitment to public interest law, experienced through her prior work with immigrant communities.
Mariana moved to Charlotte, NC in 2006 after graduating from the City University of New York School of Law and working as an attorney in NY. In Charlotte, she worked with CMS for over 2 years as a Bilingual Family Advocate and a Spanish teacher in high school and middle school. She has also volunteered with Legal Services of Southern Piedmont’s Immigration Project.
Prior to relocating to Charlotte, Mariana worked as an attorney at the Legal Aid Society’s Juvenile Rights Division in the Bronx, NY. At Legal Aid she provided criminal legal representation for low-income juveniles by safeguarding their interests and legal rights.
While in law school, she served as a volunteer for CUNY School of Law’s Immigration Clinic, St. Mary’s School of Law’s Legal Clinic in San Antonio, TX, and provided Know Your Rights workshops to juveniles in the NY foster care system as well as to Spanish-speaking community members. She also interned at the Office of Immigrant Affairs at the NY City Office of the Mayor.
Mariana is fluent in Spanish, and is a member in good standing of the New York and North Carolina State Bars, the American Immigration Lawyer’s Association, and the Mecklenburg Bar Association.
Personal
Mariana was born and raised in Puerto Rico. She is the daughter of two wonderful parents, her mother is an attorney and her father is a retired teacher. Mariana has lived in Charlotte for six years and calls it home. She enjoys cycling classes, cooking and spending time with friends.
