With more than 30 years of experience as a family law attorney, Rich has both professional wisdom and a common sense approach to representing his clients. An experienced trial attorney, he vigorously advocates for the rights of his clients and their families while striving to achieve fair, just, and creative settlements. When needed, Rich calls upon experts in accounting, real estate, financial planning, mental health, vocational evaluation, and other professions to provide necessary input into settlement discussions and/or to testify at trial. He also makes sure clients have explored counseling, mediation, and other alternatives prior to entering the court system. Rich has been selected for inclusion in Super Lawyers Edition, 2002 and 2006. He has also received an AV® Preeminent Peer Review Rating in the distinguished legal directory, Martindale-Hubbell®.*
Rich is on the Minnesota Supreme Court's list of Facilitative/Hybrid qualified neutrals under Court Rule 114, and he can serve as a court-appointed mediator, conduct mini-trials, and provide mediation/arbitration hybrid services in general civil as well as family matters. Rich's services in any of these areas may also be retained on a private basis, either before or during the course of litigation.
Another dimension of Rich's services includes conflict coaching and/or conciliation and reconciliation services, utilizing his training through Peacemaker Ministries. These processes utilize scriptural principles to assist people or organizations to resolve disputes and to bring reconciliation and healing to relationships.
He is admitted to practice law before trial and appellate courts in the State of Minnesota, the Federal District Court for the State of Minnesota, the Eighth Circuit Federal Court of Appeals, and the U.S. Supreme Court. He is a member of the Family Law and Real Estate Sections of the Minnesota and Hennepin County Bar Associations, and a past member of the Delegate Assembly of the Minnesota State Bar Association. Rich is a frequent speaker on family law and mediation related topics to legal, civic and church organizations.
Serving the needs of others has been an important lifelong goal of Rich's. He is a member and legal aid volunteer for Minnesota Christian Lawyers. Since 2005, he has been a volunteer mediator and has served two terms as Chair of the Board of Directors of Community Mediation Services, Inc. At Community Mediation Service, Inc., Rich works to help develop better ways to provide low cost mediation services in the court system, schools, and the community at large. He spends time as a teacher in the Life Skills Program at the New Hope Treatment Center in Minneapolis, where he also serves as a volunteer for Twin Cities Christian Legal Aid.
He served in Vietnam with the U.S. Army's 173rd Airborne Brigade, and represented his district in the Minnesota House of Representatives. He has a strong interest in serving the needs of children, witnessed by his dedication as a foster parent, church Sunday school teacher, as a Pioneer guide, a soccer coach, and as a volunteer for many other church and school-related activities. Rich also served for many years as a member and chairperson of the Osseo School Board.
Born in St. Paul, Minnesota, Rich received his B.A. from the University of St. Thomas and his law degree from the University of Minnesota Law School. He joined Henningson & Snoxell in 1985.
